Founder of FINéCOS

Alexandre Van Ooteghem Responsible investment, ESG and foresight

I am Alexandre Van Ooteghem. For more than fifteen years, I have worked on how investors and organisations turn sustainability commitments into decisions, frameworks, data and evidence.

My career connects asset management, responsible investment, SRI auditing, sustainable finance, foresight and organisational transformation.

15+years of experience, since 2011
SRIauditor for the French SRI label (Label ISR), AFNOR Certification
2019first action research work that led to FINéCOS

Areas of expertise

I facilitate the Climate Fresk© (since 2019, over 60 workshops), the Biodiversity Collage© (since 2023) and the Fresque de l’immobilier durable – OID© (sustainable real estate, since 2024).

01 · Background

A perspective built from several positions

I have looked at finance from several vantage points: institutional investor, auditor, head of research, consultant, lecturer and practitioner-researcher.

One question runs through my experience: how does an organisation, and an investor in particular, build a decision when data is imperfect, rules keep changing and the future remains uncertain?

My work is less about ESG as a regulatory category than about the frameworks that turn a responsible intention into decisions, practices, data, evidence and the capacity to act.

ESG data, through its very technicality, builds a situated narrative that can transform reality.

I developed FINéCOS to work precisely at this intersection: understanding systems, qualifying evidence and helping organisations build robust decisions in changing environments.

02 · Responsible investment

Responsible investment, SRI and ESG

Fonds de Réserve pour les Retraites

Institutional investor (French pension reserve fund) · 2011 – 2018

Nearly eight years working with asset managers, ESG data providers and financial service providers: manager selection and monitoring, tenders, equity and fixed-income strategies, SRI policies, voting, governance and reporting.

This experience is the foundation of my understanding of asset management: how mandates, data, models, market constraints and governance frameworks actually shape investment decisions.

Aviva Investors France

Distribution & foresight

Work with distribution networks on making financial and responsible strategies understandable for insurers, intermediaries and end investors.

A question that remains central to my work: how do you convey a complex strategy without reducing it to marketing?

France Assureurs

Sustainable investment (French insurance federation)

Industry-wide work on ESG reporting, biodiversity, real estate investment, sustainability regulation and the changing practices of institutional investors.

This experience showed me how regulatory and methodological changes spread through a professional ecosystem, take shape in practice and help transform it.

03 · Audit

SRI auditing, data and the chain of evidence

Since 2021, I have been working as an auditor for AFNOR Certification on the standard of the French SRI label (Label ISR).

My assignments cover ESG methodologies, asset selection processes, governance, controls, shareholder engagement, reporting and the consistency between stated objectives and their actual implementation.

This auditing practice has gradually shaped the way I work:

  1. intention
  2. method
  3. decision
  4. data
  5. control
  6. evidence

Alongside this, my consulting work covers SRI due diligence, methodology reviews, the quality of non-financial data and the auditability of ESG frameworks.

A claim is only worth something if it can be linked to a method, a decision and a piece of evidence.

04 · Sustainable finance

Sustainable finance, Green Bonds and real estate

Observatoire de l’Immobilier Durable

Head of Responsible Finance (French Sustainable Real Estate Observatory)

Team management, sector studies, regulatory work, methodology development and facilitation of professional ecosystems.

The work covered in particular the EU Taxonomy, the CSRD, Article 29 of the French Energy-Climate Law, the ESG and SRI practices of real estate funds, the circular economy and the real estate version of the French SRI label.

The challenge: turning regulatory and environmental requirements into methods that market players can actually use.

Société Générale / SG SFH

Green Bonds · Covered Bonds · sustainable real estate financing

With Wild Trees, I work on the real estate portfolios underlying sustainable financing programmes.

These assignments cover eligibility criteria, allocations, the integration of ESG and building data, the calculation of energy and climate benefits, and the evolution of methodologies.

They also led to a comparative analysis of European Green Bond and Covered Bond practices: Taxonomy, EPC, Top 15%, NZEB, impact measurement and auditability.

Independent consulting

Since 2023

I also carry out assignments on real estate funds, ESG methodologies, building databases, sector monitoring and the automation of analysis workflows.

05 · Foresight

Foresight and organisational transformation

Trained at the Cnam (Conservatoire national des arts et métiers) in foresight, innovation and organisational transformation, I work on how organisations build their decisions in uncertain environments.

This approach draws in particular on scenarios, weak signals, systems analysis, stakeholder dynamics, rules, controversies and dependencies.

My approach generally follows five steps:

  1. UnderstandThe problem, its context, the stakeholders, the rules and the available data.
  2. DocumentIdentify sources, assess their robustness and build a shared basis for analysis.
  3. Put into perspectiveCompare practices, identify dependencies, controversies, gaps and possible futures.
  4. BuildFormalise a suitable method, strategy, process or framework.
  5. Hand overMake the results understandable, auditable and usable by those who will carry them forward.
06 · Territories and the commons

Action research, territories and the commons

My work does not stop at financial portfolios. One question extends it: how can we reconnect savings, investors, projects and the territories they help transform?

As a director of la Coop des Communs, I contribute to the cooperative’s strategic thinking and support collectives and local projects on cooperation, governance, structuring and funding. In particular, I am working on a system to better connect projects with the foundations, funders, calls for projects and organisations able to support them.

This commitment extends several action research projects on local and regional financing carried out since 2019. My master’s thesis, “From the rock to savings” (“Du caillou à l’épargne”, written in French), conducted on Belle-Île-en-Mer, explores how savings could be more closely linked to the needs and projects of a territory.

This work continues today through an action research project on responsible investment funds: how can unitholders be more involved in shaping a fund’s responsible intention, without handing them the management decisions?

Alongside my professional activity, I devote part of my time to community work and to supporting projects that belong to the commons.

07 · Teaching

Teaching and knowledge sharing

I teach at the Cnam and at Université Paris Dauphine on responsible finance, decision-making, uncertainty and organisational transformation.

At the Cnam, I teach in particular in the “Risks, crises and decision-making” course, drawing on real cases of organisational transformation.

I also run workshops, foresight exercises and collective intelligence sessions with teams and groups.

Knowledge sharing also takes the form of open resources: FINéCOS develops and publishes tools on sustainable finance, climate, biodiversity and foresight.

A question about responsible investment, SRI auditing or foresight?

FINéCOS works with investors, asset managers and organisations facing challenges in ESG strategy, auditability, data, sustainable finance or transformation.
